The story of Matilda, a black girl living on a tropical island during a civil war. Mr Watts, the sole white man there takes it upon himself to teach, with Great Expectations  the only book he has. This book becomes Matilda' s window to the world. It is touching and enlightening, although there is some shocking brutality towards the end. It speaks volumes about humanity in the most simple narrative. I found this very sad.
